The history of the game “KENO” is surrounded by mysterious events and incredible legends. But let’s start all in order.
How did the KENO game come about
It is commonly believed that the homeland of “KENO” is ancient China. Mention of this game can be found in ancient Chinese scrolls dated 200 BC, which were carefully preserved and passed from generation to generation.
Legend has it that long ago when the Chinese provinces were mired in wars for the redistribution of territory, and there was not enough money for the maintenance of the army, a wise ruler of the Celestial Empire from the Hanshui dynasty made a non-standard decision. He came up with a game whose income went to support a huge Chinese army. Over time, this game became known as “KENO”. It is believed that the Great Wall of China was built on the money raised from KENO.
There is another legend about KENO. And it has to do with the spread of writing. To quickly teach children thousands of hieroglyphs, a kind of the first manual was invented, which was based on children’s rhymes. The poem contained a thousand non-repeating lines and was called “A Thousand Classical Hieroglyphs”. It was the first 120 characters of this poem and became the basis for the emergence of an exciting new game. According to this legend, the game “KENO” was named “The Chinese Lottery”.
It was very interesting to establish a connection to disseminate the results of the game. Postal pigeons were used to alert the remote corners of China. In this regard, after a while, the game was called the “White Doves Lottery”.
Like they played KENO in ancient times
In Ancient China, the essence of the game “KENO” was as follows: out of 120 characters, players had to mark with a brush a few characters. Small spots of ink were used as markers at that time. The ink was used to make the bet final and the player could not change his choice at the last moment. Hence the name of the KENO bet – “spot” or “spot”.
Twice a day, morning and evening, the Celestial Emperor himself pulled random combinations. And if the marked hieroglyphs coincided with the winning ones, the players received huge prizes. For many, it was a real chance to provide for their family and to enter the society of wealthy people.
Thanks to the early development of writing in China, the game has gained huge popularity among the population. Playing “KENO” was not only interesting but also considered the rule of good tone. Everyone played KENO: children, the old, the poor, the rich, in big cities and small towns.
As the name of the game “KENO” came up.
The very origin of the word “KENO” has an interesting story. There are two points of view here. Some believe that “KENO” has French roots and comes from the word “Quine” – five winning numbers. Others agree that “KENO” is of Latin origin. It is based on the word “Quini”, which means “five for each”. But no matter how the researchers of the language translate the word, they all agree on one thing: “KENO” is a numerical game, the essence of which lies in big and fast wins.
